Relaxation Room

Relaxation room in Counseling and Testing.

Purpose

Located in the University Counseling and Wellness Center, the Calm Waters Relaxation Room is a private, quiet space to develop and practice relaxation skills to enhance overall well-being. This is one space on campus to simply rest, breathe, and relax with no agenda. All USA students are welcome.

Appointments/Reservations & Availability

Student Use:

The relaxation room is available by appointment/reservation only. It is open Monday through Thursday from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Same-day appointments may be available. Students may drop by the UCWC or call us at 251-460-7051 to schedule a time for their session. For additional inquiries, please email Rhena Baxter at relaxationroom@southalabama.edu.

Faculty/Staff Use:

The relaxation room is available to University Faculty & Staff on Fridays only. The room is open on Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and closed for a lunch break from 12:00-1:00. No reservation needed for faculty/staff use. Faculty/Staff may drop by the UCWC on Fridays for their session. For additional inquiries, please email Rhena Baxter at relaxationroom@southalabama.edu.

Utilization & Policies

The room can be reserved for 30-minute sessions at a time. Utilization of the space is capped at 3 students per time slot. All students must CHECK IN and OUT with our Relaxation Room staff located in Office 221. Faculty/Staff may check-in at our front desk.

Additional Policies

  • No food, gum, or drinks (other than water) are allowed in the Relaxation Room
  • All devices checked out for use while in the Relaxation Room must be returned to the Student Worker in Office 221, where you checked in, when done
  • Devices may only be used according to the instructions
  • Issues with any devices or furniture must be reported to the Student Worker or front desk staff at the University Counseling and Wellness Center
  • All students using the Relaxation Room will respect one another’s privacy and personal space while in the room

Room Tours for Student Groups

In addition to the workshops, tours for student groups are available by appointment. These tours are designed to introduce students to the relaxation room and its resources, helping them to understand how they can use the space to manage stress and practice mindfulness. If you would like to request a specific workshop or schedule a tour, please contact Rhena Baxter at rlbaxter@southalabama.edu.

New Virtual Reality Headset

We are excited to offer a Virtual Reality (VR) headset as part of the Calm Waters Relaxation Room experience! This headset is pre-loaded with calming, guided mindfulness and meditation programs designed to support relaxation, reduce stress, and enhance overall well-being.

Use of the VR headset is limited to relaxation and wellness purposes only, and each session is capped at 30 minutes to allow access for others. For your safety, the headset should be used while seated, and users must follow all posted guidelines. To use the VR headset during your Relaxation Room visit, simply check in with the student worker at Office 221. After your session, please return the headset to the same location.

Whether you're curious about meditation or just need a break from your busy schedule, the VR experience offers a peaceful escape to help you reset and recharge.
